Cardi B sparks Twitter banter between Nigeria, South Africa

Renowned rapper and songstress, Cardi B has ignited a feud between Nigerians and South Africans on micro-blogging site, Twitter. Indeed, the banter has seen citizens of both countries take shots at each other; in what has remained one of the top trending topics on Twitter today.

The controversy began when Cardi B deployed her adopted Nigerian name – Chioma B; while notifying fans on Twitter that she will be performing in South Africa. Indeed, the talented American rapper, who visited Nigeria and Ghana in December 2019; had confirmed that she was due to storm South Africa in 2020.

The American rapper made this known via her Twitter page on Thursday, February 20, 2020; while responding to the sales of her concert tickets in South Africa.

“Cardi B fever has hit Mzansi – so much that it crashed a tickets website in seconds,” a fan account had tweeted.

It didn’t take long before the music star responded to the tweet with her Nigerian given name; Chioma B.

”SOUTH AFRICA !! Chioma B is coming !!!!…. Teach me more bout your country in the comments ❤️❤️❤️,” she had tweeted.

Subsequently, her tweet had began to generate some excitement on the micro-blogging site.

Nevertheless, her use of the Nigerian name – Chioma B – did not seem to go down well with most South Africans. For the majority who expressed their thoughts on the subject, they sought to change her name. Indeed, many came up with other South African names which they suggested Cardi B should take up instead of Chioma B.

However, Nigerians on Twitter were having none of it.

They insisted that the name Cardi B fits and opposed any attempts by the South Africans to suggest a change.

Consequently, this led to a banter between Twitter users from both countries.
